REPORTING TO: Nurse in Charge/Manager

JOB PURPOSE: To share with other staff in meeting the personal care needs of service users in a way that respects the dignity of the individual and promotes independence and to help in the general day-to-day activities of the home. Care provided by care assistants is expected to include care that would reasonable be given by members of the service user’s own family and is not expected to include tasks that would normally be expected to be undertaken by a trained nurse.



  • NVQ Level 2 and/or good basic education
  • Experience in the care of the elderly and mentally infirm and sensitive to the needs of others
  • Self motivated and organised
  • An active team player and able to work on own initiative under supervision or to lead others
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels and give accurate information when required
  • Satisfactory police check and current POVA and CRB check

  • Honesty, consideration, empathy and patience
  • Willingness to undergo further extensive training to improve knowledge and care standards within the home.


  1. To assist service users who need help with getting up in the morning, dressing, undressing, washing, bathing and use of the toilet. To encourage residents to remain as active as possible by being aware of their disabilities and using the appropriate aid equipment
  2. To help service users with mobility problems and other physical disabilities, including incontinence; help in use of care aids and personal equipment.
  3. To care for service users who are sick and needing, for example, minor dressings, bed nursing, help with feeding etc.
  4. To be aware of and maintain service user’s privacy and dignity at all times.
  5. Maintain good/accurate written care reports on all clients’ personal hygiene and key worker sheets as part of good communication with all grades of staff and professionals
  6. To help care for service users who are dying, under the guidance of the trained nurse or senior care assistant.
  7. To help in the promotion of mental and physical activities of service users through talking to them, taking them out, sharing with them in activities such as reading, writing, hobbies and recreations.
  8. To make and change beds; tidy rooms; do light cleaning and emptying commodes.
  9. To inspect, launder and mend service users clothing.
  10. To set tables and trays; serve meals; feed service users who need help; prepare light meals and wash up; tidy and clean dining rooms.
  11. To answer emergency bells, the door and telephone; greet visitors.
  12. To comply with the company guidelines, policies and procedures at all times.
  13. To report to a senior care assistant, nurse or home manager any significant changes in the health or circumstances of a service user.
  14. To participate in staff training, induction programmes, staff appraisals and appropriate staff meetings as required.
  15. Be diligent in all aspects of Health and Safety Policies and regulations and identify and record any problems.
  16. To participate in the implementation and maintenance of quality assurance policies and systems
  17. All staff are required to respect the confidentiality of all matters they might learn in the course of their employment and must respect the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998.
  18. To be aware of your responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  19. To report to your supervisor at the end of each shift and ensure information is passed on.
  20. To deal with relative enquiries and communicate all accurate information about residents in conjunction with the Nurse in Charge/Matron/Deputy
  21. To perform all other duties as may be requested of you.
